It is true that as time goes on, the chances of innovation become more limited. Additionally, these things go in cycles. A couple of years ago, there were some pretty interesting things coming out, like "Walking on the Sun" (Smashmouth), "Flagpole Sitta" (Harvey Danger), and "Brian Wilson" (Barenaked Ladies), and Alanis Morissette had an album full of original songs. Now, things are more subdued. Maybe next year....Interesting about ABBA. One of the best uses of their songs in a score was in the movie "Muriel's Wedding", with Toni Colette (more recently seen in "The Sixth Sense" and "Shaft")..........

Most of the commercial effort has gone into rap or hip-hop, which, by definition, cannot be original. And of course originality has its limits too. You probably know how much the Beatles sound like Little Richard.
