Studies have shown that children with a primary language other than English end up better educated if BOTH languages are nurtured (they actually end up better at English than English only speakers).. Children do the worst, academically, when an attempt is made to cut off the primary language entirely.

You're not giving me much to disagree with either.

I suppose I have to work harder at that. <g>

If learning Spanish is not at the expense of English or other important things that kids need to learn then I say great, go for it. However even if it doesn't have to be at the expense of English I think that the way bilingual education actually works in some places it is. Of course if you think Spanish is important to learn then the thrust would be to change the way bilingual education is taught in places where it is at its worst, rather then abandoning the idea of teaching Americans Spanish.

I think Spanish will be very important in 30 years. I don't think I underestimate its importance as much as I wish it would be less so. I fear that part of its importance will be that more and more Americans will not know English that well.
