I was just trying to lay low, but it seems to be spinning out of control. Why state legislators think they can legislate patriotism in the first place is a conundrum, not to mention the turnaround on local control. Today's local stories: captimes.com , wisconsinstatejournal.com . I was going through the pledge in my head the other night, I concluded that "one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all" sounded poetic and fine as written, and I momentarily couldn't even place where the "under God" got inserted in the red scare '50s.

The other brilliant action of the Wisconsin State Legislature this year was to mandate that schools start after labor day, at the behest of the tourism lobby. The tourism lobby is very concerned about education, you can be sure. If there's anything worse that national politicians, it's state legislators.
