I am pessimistic

Don't get me wrong here... I'm VERY pessimistic for all the reasons you aptly stated..

It will require a complete and utter rout of the extremists on the West Bank, and the rise of a moderate government determined to put economic independence before political statehood.

The PA, as currently structured, is NOT a viable state. It remains heavily dependent upon Israel for employment and economic trade. Under such circumstances the best I see is political autonomy that may, one day, lead to statehood..

But only when Israel and Jordan no longer perceive it as a threat their existence and/or governments.

Saudi Prince Waleed can make all the rhetorical suggestions he wants about advising the US to be more even sided.. But let's face some facts here.. Arafat, and the Palestinian extremists are EVERY MUCH as bit a threat to Jordan's King Abdullah, as they are to Israel.

Nadine,

do not underestimate Arik Sharon.

He understands his place in history as Patton understood his.
