I think that, in order to inspire the faithful for so many centuries, a book must be exceedingly dense, contradictory, and complex. i was just talking about this to Solon. It's like a magic eight ball, whose answers are just specific enough to be generally relevant, and thus are perfect media for the projection of the faithful's fears, desires, etc.
