why would we expect QCOM, for example, to display a growth pattern similar to CSCO, MSFT, or INTC?

The actual pattern is not critical. The overall rate of compounding is. At some high rate and at some low rate you have to think "this rate of projected compounding is unrealistic."

Unless the model ties into the product, the market, the issues involved in growth, etc., etc., etc. I don't feel like I really would have a clue whether it was meaningful or not.

And you can certainly go the next step - to build a model based on these things. I think it is great to do so, if for no other reason than it results in a person thinking about such things. Obviously you are aware that even this modeling is subject to error and inaccuracy as well. But it still does give some feedback as to whether it is meaningful or not.
