Yes, history lessons leave much to wonder about, just like the cost of oil.

Especially the critical consumption of energy, critical for the general life.

In absolute numbers though the Russian losses were far greater than any other country, some twenty million plus. Americans who have been the willing subjects of brain-washing by Hollywood or their education system may be surprised to learn that the war against Germany was won and lost on the Eastern Front - the Western front was a sideshow.

the Poles suffered the worst.

I have to admit I never included them before in such comparisons, but I believe you're probably correct.

After all, the Poles caught it both sides, the Germans and the Soviets. They lost nearly the entire cream of their officer corps which, fleeing the Germans, surrendered to the Russians. They were executed in places like the Katyn Forest, after not responding well to Soviet "re-education efforts. The regular polish soldiers were quickly conscripted into the Red Army and annihilated in the initial waves of the German assault, as well as throughout the remainder of the war, as they were considered "expendable" troops.
