SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)Intel Corp. (INTC) plans to outline new technologies and features that will be incorporated into its chips in coming years during an industry meeting next week in San Jose, Calif.

Microprocessor Forum is an annual technical symposium for system designers, hardware manufacturers and software developers to learn more about advances in microprocessor design as well as for companies to present the latest bells and whistles in their products. Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) and Transmeta Corp. (TMTA) will also make announcements about upcoming new chips.

(This story and related background will be available on the Journal's Web site, WSJ.com.)

Intel will talk about technical details of a new network processor, give an update about a new technology called HyperThreading that lets one processor act like two and get more work done, and also discuss forthcoming mobile processors with added features.

HyperThreading technology was first discussed earlier this year and Intel said it will make systems perform as much as 30% faster. The technology will appear in Xeon processors for 4way and 8way server in the first half of next year, Intel said, and will eventually be extended to the rest of the product line.

Intel will disclose new details of an upcoming Xeon MP server chip that will be coming out in 2003, and will also show new benchmarking results that show that the McKinley chip due out next year will perform almost two times faster than existing Itanium processors. McKinley is the successor to the 64bit Itanium chips.

Advanced Micro is expected to disclose more details about its planned Hammer line, which are 64bit processors expected out late next year. Transmeta is expected to introduce a new Crusoe processor. By Molly Williams; The Wall Street Journal; 4153800978

John,

New latest "Killer App" for PCs: email. Syndicated radio talk show host Michael Savage said tonight he won't open any more letters sent to him. Spread the word to the masses that email is safe!
