"Once the general public has gotten it memorized that anthrax is not contagious the fear factor should drop strongly."

That's right, and contributors to this thread have gone a long way to putting the threat in proportion to actuality.

However, I have a particular problem with the US Postmaster General, John E. Potter, who said on 10-11-01 (according to USPS website):

"We are taking every reasonable measure to assure the safety of our employees and customers," said John E. Potter, Postmaster General. "We deliver 680 million pieces of mail each day. To date, there has not been a confirmed case of transmission of anthrax using the U.S. Mail. We have however, received many threats and hoaxes over the years. And we have investigated each case."

Yes, there had been _confirmed_ cases, and he knew it, or hadn't read the news for days. It is not helpful to have a public official defuse worry by lying. I think he ought to be immediately removed from office, banned from Civil Service pension, and banned from Social Security pension. Treason charges might be considered.
