To: cosmicforce who wrote (32342 ) 10/14/2001 3:45:21 PM From: TimF Respond to of 82486 I don't think there is any law or policy in the US that says "don't give people medical care unless they speak English". Of course if the doctor can't understand them then it will be harder for him to treat them but I don't think that is an example of ignoreing people's need, and in any case a bi-linqual doctor can probably be found if needed.I think it would be reasonable for all people in Califorinia to speak Spanish as a second language Again I ask you to be more specific. Are you just expressing the idea that it would be good for people in CA to speak Spanish (in addition to English), or are you saying that we should put a lot of resource in to the school system for the teaching of Spanish every year to all students (and then what subject are you going to give up, or are you going to extend the school day?) or do you think there should be some sort of offical requirements that everything in CA be printed in both languages, or do you mean something else? What's your idea? Doesn't anyone else on this thread ever say what THEIR idea is or do they only reject the ideas of others out of hand? I'm not sure I have any concrete ideas in this area. For one thing it is not an area of primary focus or expertise for me. For another I'm not sure even what general area you are asking about. Do you want my opinion on speaking Spanish, or immigration, or medical care for poor people who can't speak English, or what? But surprise, surprise, no counter proposal appears (other than 'do nothing'). Often doing something amounts to forceing people to do something, even if it is just paying more taxes. I am fairly libertarian so I don't like that idea. Also as I said above I'm not sure what problem you want solution for. Tim
