A Report by the Seattle National Lawyers Guild WTO Legal Group
N30 ANNIVERSARY EDITION ? NOVEMBER 2000

The U.S. economy is a war time economy. With the collapse of the Soviet
Union, those who made their money peddling fear of the Soviet Boogey
Monster have had to turn elsewhere.

For the last decade there has been an escalation of the tools and tactics
used to wage war on the domestic population. It's been called "the war on
drugs," and "the war on crime." It's why more than half the adult black
male population under 27 is in some form of detention or parole, and why
most small towns have SWAT teams. It's why there's a military presence on
the U.S.- Mexican border.

It's also become a war on dissent. Part of this is the creation of the
Terrorist Bill which threatens to rebirth a new McCarthyism of guilt by
association. Part of it is the ever more heavy handed repression that has
met legally permitted protests.

The report of the National Lawyers Guild WTO Legal Group, looks at the
paramilitary response that took place during the World Trade Organization
Ministerial, the factors the created it, and the escalation that has
followed.

This report draws from the declarations of hundreds of witnesses, legal
observers, street medics and independent media producers, and thousands of
pages of public records. It utilizes the training manuals, afteraction
reports, and even the email chat rooms of police, to present a frightening
picture of untrained cops with too many weapons. There is a detailed
examination of the militarization of the police. The report traces how
the police not only use military weapons but training methods as well.

The report also looks at the factors that are driving the creation of the
WTO: Unaccountable corporations trashing the ecological base of the
planet, and most of the worlds' economies. And it examines the plans of
this economic elite to build and maintain fortified limousines, as the
rest of the global village becomes a ghetto.

Seattle is being held up as the prototype of a new type of "war" by the
elite. This is the report that examines their war plans.

"No other critique of this event has been quite as comprehesiveYour work
has led to the birth of a truly historical document."
Larry Gossett, King County Councilmember.

Today's Slate by Jakob Weisberg....Let's take the foreign policy failure first. Clearly, the contributing missteps in this area began well before Clinton became president. After the mujahideen rebels drove the Soviets out of Afghanistan in 1989, the United States withdrew its attention from the country as well, just as we did in Nicaragua, another country where the anti-Communist forces we supported proved victorious. It is impossible to know what might have happened if we had taken the responsibility of nation-rebuilding in Afghanistan more seriously. But there is at least a non-trivial chance that we might somehow have prevented the Taliban takeover that occurred in 1996 and Afghanistan's subsequent devolution into a haven for international terrorists. There's enough blame for that abandonment to go around: Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush deserve some of it for not seeing any continuing responsibility on our part. The American news media deserves some blame as well for not paying closer attention.

You know you guys are amazing whatever happened that was good during the Democrats reign was because of the previous Republicans and whatever bad that happens during the Bush Admin is the result of the previous Democrats. It is absolutley blind mindlessness that you folks can't find anything to give credit to the Dems for or give blame to the Republicans! When your minds begin to think clearly and objectively and you realize that both sides have done good and bad then your are useful as Americans until such time you are no better than the terrorists as you are the enemy and trying to destroy our freedom.
