Thanks so much for posting Sullivan's article from last week's NYT (This Is a Religious War). I was extremely impressed by it and couldn't wrest it from the NYT site. we're discussing it on the Boxing Ring thread.

Thanks also for the link to Sullivan's website. Unfortunately I've got to agree with him that the chance of confining this to Afghanistan is close to nil.

I like Andrew Sullivan, but when he goes off on the wild side, I always think of this article.

Re: andrewsullivan.com

I completely agree with ridiculing OBL though I would caution that care is taken not to stray into cartooning Arab-centric bias pictorially. Better to make OBL the Buffoon-in-Chief. Not only does it provide comic relief, but puts him into perspective, as he is rightfully a gnat, and it may enrage him and his stooges.

I agree that Bush is straying from the message of "this ain't no religious war" when he ends with "Gol bless Humerika"... he is shoring up his Right base (plus the greyhairs) by doing so, but surrenders the propaganda war to the enemy that wants to make it a religious war, the better to recruit with. We need wise leadership, not savvy politics.

As for the Arab coalition and a future clash, economic development for the non-fundamentalists is the best way to further isolate the extremist minority. When the clash comes, it will not pose the threart it does today.

Andrew Sullivan is genuinely on his best behavior with these two pieces. I had forgotten that when he is on his mark, he is invaluable.

Thanks for this post as well,

John
