People may be uneducated ignorant and primitive but not dumb

The ignorant and primitive are not dumb, but are easily controlled by the powerful. Whether their power comes from wealth, from religion, or from ideology, in modern times ease of communication and transportation has allowed a few powerful individuals to control large masses to do their bidding, as shown by Hitler, Hirohito, Stalin, and others. Today we have radical Islam and their supporters masquerading as moderate leaders. The only thing that has stopped such individuals in the past was military power, and when the masses were educated and found realistic alternatives, they chose democracy. But first their oppressors had to be destroyed.

Let's see what we can do in Afghanistan once the military campaign is over. Hopefully we can do better than in Iraq, where we sent a message that we don't have the stomach to finish a job. If we can be successful in building a democratic Afghanistan, Iraq could be next, and eventually the arab masses in other countries might throw off their yokes and contribute to world progress (as they did when Europe was still in the dark ages) instead of reverting to 7th century thinking. This is the major decision and struggle facing the world. It may not happen for 100 years, or it may not happen at all. For the sake of our kids, I hope we can be successful.
