I think it would be good for everyone to read both statements together. What an intelligent person would come away with is that sexual orientation does not make one good or bad. Just as with heterosexuals there are heroes and there are predators, and there is a vast field of Joe Averages in between the two. I could write two identical statements about heterosexuals- the difference is that almost everyone in American realizes that heterosexuals are just people- as such they can be heroic wonderful people, or they can be homicidal maniacs. Not everyone realizes yet that homosexuals can be heroic wonderful people. Why there are people right here on SI who like to argue that homosexuality is just about the same thing as being a pedophile- I know this will surprise you, but I can find you links to such arguments. These poor ignorant folks are the ones who need to read about gay heroes, imo.

Would you defend the second statement as factually accurate and absent of any inferences about gays?

I don't know if the statement is factually accurate. I don't know anything about Gacy except that he was a serial killer. I infer from context that he was, indeed, a bricklayer and gay and that killed 25 men whome he buried in his basement. Otherwise, your question to me wouldn't make sense.

As for what inferences I might make about the mention of his being gay, I would associate the murders with sexual predation rather than some other motive such as racial hatred or financial gain or thrill killing.

Gacy was fat not brawny. Your assertion is factually incorrect.

You didn't comment as to the inferences, so I presume you felt there were none.

I inferred that the author was glad that the military might finally have come around to being more accepting of gays.

If I laugh any harder today, my sides will start to ache. You still dance around the issue and don't sound, to me, like you want an honest answer, that you are really interested in an answer. You cloak your opinion in questions, imo. And that is an inference on my part, so it might be wrong and not the truth of your intentions.

There are only a couple of people on this board who could give you an answer from experience, and only one who probably would. But the manner in which you ask, and the examples you chooce, don't lend credence to your interest being a detached, honestly curious in the hopes of learning and understanding, one.

There is an answer to your question. But most people here already know what it is.
