U.S. pursuing domination of Central Asia, Caucasus region: Safavi
Chalus, Oct 13, IRNA -- U.S. adventurism in the region has sparked a
new race among European countries and international conglomerates to
secure a foothold in the Caspian Sea, the commander of Islamic
Revolution Guard Corps, Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi said here
Saturday, adding this has made the region prone to confrontation.
"America and its allies are trying to launch a new phase of a
presence in the region, which will lead to intense rivalry among
European powers and multinational companies," he told a group of
military cadets in this Caspian city.
Safavi said Washington's prime objective in its military showdown
in the region was to dominate the Central Asia and Caucasus region.
Given the huge hydrocarbon reserves in the Caspian and the world's
need to energy in the next 20 years, world powers had become
intensively interested in the region, he added.
"The results of regional development have obviously made the
Caspian Sea the focus of attention of regional and ultra-regional
powers," Safavi said, adding this could pose numerous challenges for
the littoral states.
Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, which have
coastline on the Caspian, are yet to come up with a formula for
drawing up a legal regime of the Caspian Sea to govern the
exploitation of its resources.
Iran seeks a condominium or common sovereignty over the sea and
has made it known that it considers any unilateral deals for energy
explorations in the Caspian Sea null and void before the issue of
legal regime of the inland waters is settled.
Safavi also condemned U.S.-led attacks on Afghanistan, saying
Washington's key objective in the strikes was to divert the world'
attention from racist Israeli atrocities in the occupied Palestinian
lands.
"Although terror attack on New York and Washington was inhuman,
the American onslaught on the defenseless Afghan people is more
cruel," he said.

Iran just bought 10 billion dollars worth of millitary equipment from Russia. Curioser and curioser.

Maybe Iran views Kazakh oil as "Muslim" oil? So what's the Russian "endgame" here?
