Wimpy U.S.A.:

"Lessons That Should Have Been Learned
Shmuel Wolfson
11 October 2001

After the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center, it appeared that the United States had finally learned some lessons about the true nature of terrorism and was going to make a serious effort to fight this global threat. Yet as time went on, the tiger tuned into a kitten, and the focus of anti-terrorist efforts is now against Bin Laden. This is truly a sad outcome. There were many lessons that the U.S. could, and should, have learned from these events.

The following are some of the lessons that should have been learned:

1) A serious effort must be made to track down and apprehend all terrorists. For every Bin Laden you kill, 100 more are ready to fill his shoes, especially after the tragically successful attack on the World Trade Center. A successful attack is the greatest motivation for more attacks.

Binyamin Netanyahu had an excellent recommendation: to treat terrorists as pirates were treated when they were successfully routed. This does not mean a war against Islam. Most Moslems, although they may not agree with the American lifestyle, are either opposed to terrorism or just not willing to kill (or be killed) for their beliefs. It could easily be emphasized that this war is against all terrorists, not Islam itself. This would lessen the fear of Arab states cutting off the oil supply.

2) The U.S. should start sympathizing with Israel instead of forcing Israel into more talks with the Palestinian Authority. Arafat is a known terrorist who has personally ordered the slaughter of school children. Yes, for a while he claimed to be opposed to terrorism - just long enough to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, stock up on a tremendous amount of Israeli-supplied guns and smuggle in stockpiles of more lethal, illegal weapons. The smuggling was accomplished by various methods, such as the trucks of Palestinian officials´ vehicles who were exempt from security checks.

In one report, Israeli border guards watched Palestinian officials entering PA controlled areas in heavily loaded cars, clearly indicating that illegal arms were weighing them down. Unfortunately, they were powerless to stop them due to their immunity.

It´s interesting that the U.S. all along coerced Israel into negotiating with terrorists, while innocent people were dying, while Israelis had (and have) to live with the fear of being blown up on buses or in restaurants or malls. Now the same U.S. must decide whether to negotiate with the Taliban. Americans now have to live with the fear of being blown up on airplanes or perhaps Greyhound buses. The message is clear: the U.S. should have backed Israel instead of forcing Israel into negotiating with terrorists.

3) There are a lot of people out there that have very different dreams than the American one. There are strong differences of opinion as to the definition of a moral or just way of living. For Americans, this is a frightening reality. Just when Americans thought they were leading the world in morality and justice, they have to rethink. Why are their values not universally accepted? Are there societies that don´t idolize the pursuit of "happiness"? One of my history professors once told our class that in an earlier draft of the constitution it read "life, liberty and the pursuit of wealth." They changed it, however, after deciding that it had the wrong connotation. The actual text, "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," is close to the same meaning in any case. For most Americans it´s one and the same.

4) The last (and most important) lesson, is that G-d, being in charge of world events, has sent a very powerful message. American society has to change. Children who can boast of a family - a father and mother that married and stayed married - are becoming a rare breed. The drive in society is to have as much pleasure as possible without breaking any laws. You can´t legislate everything. You can´t force people to invest in a marriage or their children. Inevitably, a society that only cares about pleasure will end up hurting others as well. The decadence in the world, and in the U.S. as the world leader, is reaching intolerable levels. Things have to change, in one way or another.

It appears that the U.S. has not heard, or has chosen to ignore, all of these messages. The American response was a surge of patriotism, waiving the flag. Is that the only response?

After the attack on the World Trade Center, CNN´s website posted a picture of an anti-American protest. The banner read "Think America. Why do so many people hate you?" They have a point. It is important to think about why the hate exists. The saddest part of all is that the U.S., by not hearing these messages, is setting itself up for much more devastating attacks."

So is the prince's ten million in offered aid guilt money?

Are the 4 million Palestinians in refugee camps authors of their own misfortune? It could be Jews in those camps. What would you have them do?

Easy to turn a blind eye to the refugee camps but where did they come from? Perhaps two wrongs don't make a right, but just because the attack on the WTC took place does not put the Palestinians' demands for a decent place to live and self determination permanently on hold. It is the basic right of any people.

If you continue to deny rights of others in Palestine then you seal your fate. Palestine must have a state. It must also do right. It will not change their obligation to live peaceably, and this is a difficult area, as not all Palestinians will be satisfied, but at least it will give us a chance to be unequivocal in our condemnation of any acts of aggression that they would do after that.
