Remember, the chief causes of interest by the British empire in the ME during WWI. 1. Churchill switched the Imperial Navy to oil from coal as a fuel source. 2. Rich deposits of oil found in Iraq. In WWII the Germans desperately tried to capture Baku and the ME. Oil again. The Wehrmachts ability to wage war was seriously compromised by petrol shortages. This is why the development of syn fuels was such a high priority of Speer. Why are we in the Persian gulf today? Oil. Why is OBL's priority the destabilzation of SA? Oil. Why does he want all restrictions off of Iraq? Oil. To him, the Palestinians are a side show of a sideshow. Cut off oil and you kill the ability of the West to wage war. As Stalin once asked of the Pope, "How many divisions does he have?" The Pope may only have sway in Venezuela and Mexico. ;o}
