I only knew that one because I'd spent a while tracking it down recently. I had an old memory of "There are no allies, only interests", but thought it was Clausewitz or something. Somebody told me Washington, who expressed similar general sentiments in his famous farewell "address". Never heard of Palmerston before finding that quote. Palmerston apparently knew something about Afghanistan, though. You should stick around, if getting attributions wrong was the worst that ever happened here, this thread would be. . . different.
