OT - Since this article discusses the issues of homosexuality in Moslems, I have a question I have never dared to ask any Moslem friend of mine... Rumi was inspired and transformed from an ordinary schoolteacher to a mystical poet thru his association with the Shams of Tabrez. Rumi's poetry has always moved me. Radical Moslems have found it incensous. Was the relationship between Rumi and Shams of Tabrez a homosexual one ? Can anyone confirm or deny this ? The first poem on this link is the one he wrote for Shams after the latter was murdered in a jealous rage, allegedly by Rumi's son. Message 16328562

Hi HG; Re the bizarre sexual / religious beliefs of suicide bombers. This may be so, but my reading of the Koran doesn't support any of that stuff. Humans have a long history of misquoting each other's religious books. I suggest that this is what happened here. If you want to find a really horrid version of the Koran, go read a translation by the Fundamentalist Christians. But if you want a translation that would be less repugnant, you should try one that is translated by mainstream Moslems. It's a short book, and it is beautiful in many ways. It's on the internet in translation in several places. Here's a good one: submission.org -- Carl P.S. Perhaps one of the Arabic speakers will comment on the accuracy of the above translation, or will give a link to a better.
