Here is what you asserted;
People who drive gas-guzzling SUVs are unpatriotic. I do not know whether you drive a vehicle that gets 13 mpg highway. If you do, you are unpatriotic.

Move to Saudi Arabia if you wish to drive a gas-guzzling vehicle.

And when I asked you to explain how I was unpatriotic, you replied:

Trade it in on a donkey.

I know things get heated here so let's get beyond that and get to your point. Yes, during the last decade we have forgotten everything the 70's taught us. I think we have gone from importing 30% of our oil to 60% and in doing so have mortgaged our security. This is a main point of the Bush energy plan. I myself will be watching to see that it goes beyond that to reducing our dependancy on fossil fuels, period.

Your point about fuel standards are taken. It has clearly had an effect on the proliferation of these vehicles but general highway safety has as well. The speed and handling of smaller cars has turned the highways out here into racetracks with a horde of Hondas, Toyota's and the like, zipping in and out of lanes, pushing speeds into the 80 mhp range. This has created a dangerous environment on the highway and many people just opt for these vehicles for safety. It played a big part in my decision 6 years ago when my first was born.

I don't have a big problem slamming automakers for what they did, just remember these negotiations took place with a governmental body. They are equally culpable.

BTW, I began to worry over 2 years ago as I saw many more of my customers driving these vehicles knowing that the economic cycle was maturing and that gas prices were unsustainably low. Many of these people now find themselves unable to afford to drive these vehicles due to fuel costs and yet are upside down on these vehicles. I could see it coming.
