People have a sense of control over auto death, at least that is what they think, or what they eat, but there is no direct control over terrorist acts. That is the psychological flaw here, people don't have control over many auto deaths and we take safe food for granted. Most threats from those sources are invisible and unexpected. And thousands of people are deliberately targeted and murdered every year without causing mass panic. Finally, we have faced the threat of mass death from terrorism for years if not decades. Yes, we faced the EXACT SAME THREATS when we were riding the NASDAQ bubble and everyone was on top of the world. So we have the same set of threats and the same risk level in our daily lives (Bin Laden has targeted the US since the early 1990's). Some folks will panic and disrupt their normal lives - even my parents suggested I cancel a planned visit by air in a few weeks. I refused to change my plans. Look, I am not trying to bash people, just present a voice on the side of calm and context where I see lots of emotionalism around SI. If a few less people spend their weekend overwrought by anxiety, I will have accomplished something. There is virtually nothing the average American can do to change the situation anyway. I just came back from having coffee at a cafe where the next table was occupied by four young men speaking Arabic. Was I worried? Did I move away or ask the management to kick them out? No, I was glad they are out in public and not giving into the collective fears that some people are manifesting lately. Good luck.
