U.S. PLANS TO SPEND $1 BILLION TO COUNTER DISEASE

Thompson said the United States had enough drugs to treat two million people for 60 days for anthrax and had reached agreement with the White House budget office to ask Congress for another $1 billion to spend on countering the threat of bio-terrorism.

``We have just reached an agreement with the Office of Management and Budget to go into Congress this week and ask for an extra billion dollars ... to make sure that Americans ... are going to be protected,'' he said.
