have paid protection money to bin Laden and other radicals...>>>

Sure they have..other radicals are Arafat, Hamas and alike..
But you nailed it, Protection Money, they have done nothing to solve any problem, just to isolate themselves from any reasonable solution...They will only pay lip-service...

You mean we dealt with the regime in power and made the best of it, as opposed to overthrowing regimes and installing our own puppets? Or should we just not get involved and mind our business, and not protect US interests worldwide? Either way, I have a sinking feeling you would find fault with US policy. Let's see the permutations here.

1. Scenario: The US deals with existing regimes and attempts to make the best of the situation.
Criticism: The US is propping up dictators and autocrats

2. Scenario: The US overthrows dictators and autocrats in strategic regions.
Criticism: The Imperialist Militant US is oppressing whole nations and enforcing its pax Americana at the point of a gun.

3. Scenario: The US collapses back into isolationism and does not seek to protect US interests around the world
Criticism: The sole superpower is shirking its responsibilities and is being unilateral and selfish
