What does "we should make allowances for people who are new to the wider world" mean? Isn't this just a way of saying we shouldn't expect "them" to be civilized. Many developing nations are heirs to ancient civilizations, older than our own. Many people in developing nations, particularly the classes who run things, are more well-traveled, well-educated, and cosmopolitan than backwoods-raised American rubes like me. I don't think we should consider them our inferiors - moral-wise or other-wise.

Re. imposing values - sometimes that may be a good thing. Over the last half century, for example, we imposed our democratic values on Germany and Japan. I think that was good for everyone. I'm not real keen to impose our values on Afghanistanis but it would be great for that country if that happened.

I am not for imposing values. Lord knows we wouldn't want developing nations to hold elections, pass laws against discrimination against minorities, allow free speech and assembly or have courts where even the most-heinous murderers are according years of judicial appeals unless they really, really want to.

Any other stance would be cruel and imperialistic...

If it wasn't for IMPOSED values, many of your "new people" (whatever that means, Mr. Patronising) would still be hunter gatherers living hand to mouth and with a life expectancy of 30. I suppose its fine when the "new people" IMPOSE values on each other, though. Nothing like a little imposing of Shariah law to remove all those evil Western IMPOSED values and return the natives to the good old days of 1000AD.
