Enjoy your fantasy about enforcing the Constitution according to your own personal tastes - the judiciary won't allow it, the police won't allow it, the army won't back you and most politicians won't either. That is what has preserved the Republic for 200 years.

Not to mention the majority of Americans who aren't out in the streets clamoring for us to install a Beijing-style regime.

I couldn't care less whether you think I am right or wrong. I know who is in the minority in this country's political landscape. Just have to look around at what the important actors actually do (as opposed to the idle chat).

So go out and put through the referendum I suggested if you are so sure you can. I'll be waiting. You are SO right, you can't lose.

Can you? Talk is a lot easier than action. Show me your brave new world in action. My guess is, once the hubbub dies down the backbone of the Republic will show itself again through reason, resolve and living our normal lives free of paranoia and knee-jerk reactions.

Much to your disappointment, no doubt. Apocalyptic scenarios are so much more fun. At least you can sit around talk about the moronic wimp who keeps back-talking you on SI.

End of discussion. Have a good week.

BTW, I live a few miles away from the Pentagon. If the terrorists hit Washington, I go up in smoke or a biological cloud or whatever. So don't preach to me from lah-lah land way out West about who's a target.

You seem to be a student of history--except only those portions of history that support your prejudices. The only casualties on mainland US in World War II were civilian. A family picnicking in Oregon--victims of the incendiary balloon attack by the Japanese who lofted thousands into the air in the hopes that they would land all over the US, start fires, and instill terror--IN THE CIVILIAN POPULACE. The last time I looked, a drifting balloon is not all that easy to aim at a military installation.

If I get your drift, ahem, you believe that cracking down on all of Islamic origin would put pressure on Islamic nations to mend their ways, and pressure them to our way of thinking, if not living. Just what we need, more prejudicial treatment to tip more moderate Muslims toward extremism. And yeah, I do think moderate Muslims could/should be doing more to win the battle of the minds of the many faces Islam.

When in history has police state rule worked for more than a short time, and what kind of life do the conquerors, as well as the vanquished have under police rule? Look at Israel for a current example. Sure, there are Islamic extremists that want the demise of Israel. But the settling of 7000 Jews among over a million Palestinians, and the permanent state of chaos that has resulted, is just nuts. A Palestinian state doesn't of itself guarantee peace, but without a Palestinian state, peace is guaranteed never to exist for Israel.

While I certainly agree that we, and especially Canada to the north, have been way to lenient regarding foreign national entry policies, there are many things we can do to tighten up our borders without subverting the Constitution. Ironically, big ag and businesses, and their lobbied and greased client politicians are as much to blame for our porous borders as liberal policies. Any time there has been a push on businesses to require proof of legal residency as a condition of employment, they have screamed bloody murder in fear of losing cheap labor. In the old days, immigrants were required to have sponsors who would be responsible for them.

As for Japanese internment, it had nothing to do with their protection. We didn't intern people of German descent, and there were plenty of them. If we had, we would have interned Charles Lindberg, an avowed Nazi sympathizer.

Here's one vote for Dale.
