I bought ELON this AM, interesting divergence from the rest of the market this morning. I see that as a show of strength, also started the rebound from a higher level then what happen during the spring lows.

Atmel Ships World`s Highest Density, Smallest Footprint FPGA Configuration Memories
Business Wire
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

October 15, 2001 08:13:00 (ET)

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct 15, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Atmel(R) Corp. (ATML, Trade) announced today the immediate availability of the world's smallest footprint In-system programmable (ISP) configuration memories for SRAM-based FPGAs and FPSLIC(TM) (Field Programmable System Level Integrated Circuit) devices. A combination of smaller process geometry and a 2-wire industry standard serial interface allow Atmel to provide 65K, 128K, 256K, 512K, 1M and 2M-bit AT17 series ISP configuration memory devices in a 6mm x 6mm x 1mm, 8-pin LAP package. Uniquely, Atmel's configuration memories provide ISP capabilities in space saving 8-pin package options where traditional 4-wire programming solutions require higher pin-count and larger footprint packages.

The new 8-pin LAP package devices from Atmel can directly replace existing OTP (one-time programmable) 8-pin SOIC and 8-pin VOIC packages offered by other FPGA vendors. Cascadable to support higher density FPGA products these ultra low power devices can be in-system-programmed using Windows(R) based software tools supplied by Atmel with the devices. In addition, some of the memory not used to store the FPGA configuration code can be used as general purpose non-volatile memory storage, saving additional board space and materials costs. Priced equivalently to an OTP solution, Atmel's ISP solution is also available as industry's broadest pin compatible ISP Configurator family. In addition the system engineer can directly replace existing one-time programmable (OTP) solutions with Atmel's ISP capable devices, reducing design time, production cost, and design risk.

In portable applications the 6mm x 6mm x 1mm thick LAP package and ultra low power consumption make Atmel's AT17 Series devices a natural choice. Features such as remote update capabilities and a simple programming interface make these parts well suited to telecom and network applications. Pin compatible packaging and a broad product offering allows for risk free migration of existing designs as new features are added.

"By using an industry standard 2-wire interface, Atmel's AT17 series of devices provide designers with a simple, reliable interface for the industry's smallest footprint ISP capable FPGA configuration memories. Atmel is committed to providing the system engineer with a cost-effective package migration path across the density spectrum as supported by this 8-pin LAP packaging solution," stated Martin Mason, Atmel's Programmable SLi Marketing manager. "At the end-user level, this capability will enable smaller form factors, ideal for target applications such as line cards, portable instrumentation and hand held test equipment," Mason concluded.

All six configurator densities (65K, 128K, 256K, 512K, 1M and 2M) in the 8-pin LAP package are available now. Prices start at under $2 (10K units) for the 65K AT17LV65-10CC. The 2Mbit AT17LV002-10CC part is priced at $16.30 (10K units).
