Tim - read the fine print in the brochures of the funds.
Their purpose is, gnerally speaking, to mimic an index.
(Can count on your fingers which ones actually have the pupose to do BETTER than a reference index).
As indexes were plunging, they obviously preferred to limit their losses by keeping unusual large cash positions.
(Hey, managers earn bonuses!)
But, the fine prints only allows a small percentage of cash (3 to 5%) and the deadline is their fiscal year end: balance day. <g>
