If the economy erodes further, the projected surpluses evaporate. Only if the economy grows at a robust pace will things get remotely on track. There are calls all around for some sort of stimulus package. The least harmful to the economy is tax cuts. The lesson from the supply- side revolution was, in fact, that deficits didn't matter as much as people had thought they would. Inflation and interest rates went down after tax cuts, even with growing deficits. Government revenues increased, both nominally and in real dollars. If only spending had decreased, we would have reduced deficits, instead of expanding them.....
