MSN vs. AOL in a broadband battle

msnbc.com

BROADBAND may finally be ready for its close-up with the new versions of online services MSN and AOL.
The U.S. economy is teetering on recession, but there’s been no slowdown in the adoption of broadband or high-speed services in the last year, with more than 4 million U.S. households adding fast Internet connections through a cable modem or telephone (DSL) line, according to Gartner Inc., the technology consulting firm.
Broadband penetration in U.S. households has nearly doubled in the past year and is expected to reach 11 million households, or 10 percent of U.S. households, by the end of 2001, Gartner forecasts.
That’s the state of high-speed Internet access as behemoths Microsoft and AOL get serious about pushing their broadband services.

“Literally every [online] subscriber will become up for grabs as they move from narrowband to broadband,” said Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer during a news conference Monday.

11 million by the end of the year? Seems a bit high.
