Data Technology in China

Demonstration Achieves Data Transmission Speeds of up to
153 kbps, Supporting A Variety of Mobile Devices and
Applications

Lucent Is the First Foreign Vendor to Complete CDMA 1X
Data Call in China

SHANGHAI, China, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- China Unicom subsidiary
Shanghai Unicom and Lucent Technologies today completed CDMA 1X
voice and data calls in China at a special demonstration held in Shanghai.
Lucent is the first foreign vendor to accomplish this in China. Advanced
mobile Internet services, including wireless Web browsing, e-mail and
video streaming, were sent and received via laptop computers and personal
digital assistants (PDAs) at speeds of up to 153 kilobits per second (kbps),
about 10 times faster than what is available today.

Shanghai Unicom and Lucent are demonstrating the new mobile Internet
services for visitors at a temporary exhibit center at the Shanghai Sofitel
Hyland Hotel in conjunction with the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation
(APEC) conference. Using China Unicom's Lucent-built network, attendees
can visit Websites established for the conference using this advanced wireless technology.

``The CDMA 1X voice and data calls achieved through our efforts with China Unicom represent a
significant milestone in the development of mobile communications in this country,'' said Jason Chi,
chairman of Lucent Technologies China. ``This demonstration also gives people an idea of the types of
exciting new services that China Unicom will be able to provide its customers over its existing CDMA
network in the near future.'' CDMA 1X is an advanced and efficient wireless technology being
introduced worldwide. Compatible with the CDMA (code division multiple access) network that China
Unicom is currently deploying with Lucent, CDMA 1X nearly doubles the voice capacity of CDMA
networks while also providing high-speed data capabilities, at speeds nearly 10 times greater than what is
currently available. China Unicom will be able to provide new services dependent on such high-speed
transmission capabilities using its existing radio frequency spectrum as well as its current CDMA
infrastructure.

In support of the APEC conference, taking place from Oct. 15 to 21, Lucent is working with China
Unicom to provide participants with industry-leading CDMA 1X service. Using handsets supplied by
Kyocera Wireless Corp., visitors to the demo are provided with high-speed mobile data connections --
supported by the Lucent-supplied China Unicom CDMA 1X mobile network -- giving them access to the
Website dedicated to APEC and a full range of other applications including video on demand (VoD),
Web browsing, e-mail, file downloads and video postcards. Fifty Kyocera model 2255 CDMA 1X
handsets, effectively acting as wireless modems, are being used to connect laptop computers to the
network at speeds of up to 153kbps. Sierra Wireless and GTRAN Wireless, Inc. are also supplying
CDMA 1X wireless modem PC cards for both laptops and PDAs. China Unicom and Lucent will be
demonstrating the CDMA 1X trial network throughout the week.

About China Unicom

China Unicom, founded in 1994, is the second largest telecommunications carrier in China. It is the only
service provider licensed in China to offer full telecom service in fixed line, IP phone, domestic toll,

US$6.3 billion in funds through an IPO offering and became the largest publicly traded company outside
of Japan in Asia.

The China wireless market is one of the largest in the world with existing capacity of 85 million lines at
the end of 2000 and is expected to grow 30 million lines or more annually. As of September 2001, China
Unicom's GSM network has been expanded to approximately 35 million subscribers in more than 270
Chinese cities nationwide. The CDMA network represents China Unicom's strategic plan to establish
itself as a major wireless service provider in China.
