There is a funny bit of trivia about Central Califory. In the 1930's, for those of you who don't know your Steinbeck, California was overwhelmed by Oklahomans and panhandle Texans. There was this town called, I kid-you-not, Punkin Center. They grew punkins, it would seem.

On all the maps up until the 1970's this little town proudly labeled itself Punkin Center. About 5 years after the Interstate connected Punkin Center to the rest of the world, a strange thing happened. The signs came down and were replaced with the correctly spelled "Pumpkin Center".

I guess they couldn't stand the down-home image being conveyed by the misspelled town name. I was always amused by that. If your town is called Punkin Center, call it Punkin Center proudly. Peer pressure can be a powerful thing, I guess.
