I think Nixon is rightfully lauded for his work with China,
A perfect illustration of one of the secrets of politics: Get a leader of the opposition to propose what you want.

Any Democrat could have been slapped with the "soft on Communism" label if he proposed recognizing China.

Nixon's anti-Communists credentials were impeccable. He had essentially been a McCarthyite in the '50s. Nobody could stick that label on him.

And nobody would attack him. The Democrats mostly wanted recognition. And the Republicans weren't about to attack a Republican President.

Want socialized medicine? Get Bush to propose it. :-)
