Ike.. exporting people is not the sign of achievement you make it out to be. maybe for Pakistan, which is increasingly a remittance economy. For India, while every middle class family probably has someone in the states or gulf - it is only exceess inventory. The rest of India does n't miss a heartbeat. The Indian English writers are a cool thing to have but are of hardly greater significance than the local film producers, music directors, or any others who have made a name for themselves.
As for history, wonderful how it can be spun anyway you want to spin it. India did not coalesce into a single unit except under the british, because 'technology' had improved from the 1200-1700 to 1857-1947, the earlier invaders never completely conquered the whole country, at best everything was in a flux with different invaders coming and going. After the British completed their conquest it was possible to disrupt them through non violence precisely because they had a modern economy with cotton mills etc. that could be affected by a buy Indian movement.
Much of the poverty got created in the 19th and 20th century. In the early 1800's the standard of living in India and england were comparable down to the poorest folk.
Also, while poverty cannot be denied away, there is also some component of the 'western' construction of poverty. i.e. If you use local materials and live simple you are poor, if you use industrial goods you are rich. Knowing a local language is somehow inferior to knowing english. Many of these attitudes will probably be modified or unlearned as India becomes even more indian.
Even today, a middle class indian(my dad) who owns a house may actually be richer than a middle class american (me) in real dollars because the indian may have zero debt. But this is hard to fathom for people who think that the whole world goes around on account of US foreign aid.
