kap,

re: Don't pretend that nothing has changed, because it has, regardless of the fear factor.

Where did I write that nothing has changed?

re: These attacks are very well calculated, because they go to the heart of the US economy. They attack our productivity. The efficiency of air travel and freight has been disrupted first. Now the US postal system is grinding to a halt.

You don't even mention that they've thrown the US government into a budget deficit. It's a rational reaction to increase security, but some of the reactions have been irrational, some are even being rolled back (restricted airspace over US cities). I don't think the postal service is quite "grinding to a halt", that's the kind of rhetoric you get when people are reacting with irrational fear instead of rational thought.

re: What is next? Anthrax contamination of cardboard packaged consumer items such as TVs and computers could be next. Shopping malls ventilation systems may also be easily infected.

Think. None of that is easy. First you need a person with the motivation, then the access to the chemicals, then access to the "target", then the technical ability, then they need not to get caught. If all this stuff is so easy, why is this jerk sending anthrax in the mail, a pretty low tech delivery system compared to your imagination? If you let fear dominate your thoughts, I guarantee you can come up with 1000 unrealistic doomsday scenarios. Because you can think it doesn't make it real.

re: Our society is very vulnerable to major losses of productivity, triggered by fear of terrorism and the associated "preventive" measures.

There you are 100% correct, with "fear" being the operative word. I never thought I would see this country cower from the likes of a bin Laden.

Could there be another major terrorist attack, of course there could. Could there be a catastrophic earthquake in San Francisco? Of course, but people don't give up their San Francisco lifestyle out of fear. Could a major hurricane hit Tampa? Yes, but I'm not leaving, it's a rational tradeoff. A tornado in the midwest, getting hit by a drunk driver when I go to Blockbuster to pick up a rental movie... All these dangers are much more real than terrorism, yet people get on with their lives.

Rational precautions yes, not irrational fear.
