Great idea! My husband and I just wrote the following proposed email to our federal representatives. Feel free to cut and paste to suit your own opinions:

Dear Mr. (Ms. X)

I am writing you to urge you to support energy independence for the United States.

I encourage you to support the following initiatives:

1. Exploration for and production of more domestic sources of oil, including offshore sources and the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).
2. Review of environmental standards to encourage more use of coal and nuclear energy for production of electricity.
3. Review of the ban on mining low sulfur coal at Grand Staircase-Escalante.
4. Encourage and support research in the production of synthetic oil from coal.
5. Support for the purchase from, and aid in, the development of the oil production capacity of the nations which are assisting us in the current conflict, particularly those in the former Soviet Union. At present we do not buy any oil from Russia, Uzbekistan, or Turkmenistan, which are certainly worthy of our support.
6. Reduce oil imports from hostile nations, such as Iraq and Iran.
7. Review of our support for Saudi Arabia, which has a troubling record of support for terrorist organizations.
8. Encourage research and development of alternative energy sources such as fuel cells, hybrid automobiles, solar panels, and the like.

I reminded Senator Allen and Representative Davis that my kids and I worked for their campaigns and I still have their bumper stickers on my car. Nothing like the personal touch.:)
