I have argued elsewhere that God himself is subject to the rules of morality.

But I would argue that the very idea of absolutism isn't obnoxious, it's just hard to figure out.

But is it that bloody difficult?

I tend to look towards our shared biology. By way of the desert island business we find that ethics requires a community of at least two. We've got billions, all with a shared ancestry and basic interests. What should not be so hard is to realize that we are, despite our interesting and valuable (albeit accidental) cultural differences, we're all in the same damned boat wanting: food, clothing, shelter and the reasonable hope that our children will survive and prosper. All the rest gilds the lily.
