I will bother you with only one more example - not meeting your absolute standard of sterility, of course.

Some of our POWs during the Vietnam war were held for long periods in solitary confinement. During this isolation many developed a strengthened faith in God/goodness and credited that with their survival.

In fact, they "practiced" many "virtues" without stimulus or reinforcement.

In the same vein, does the man on the island not have a choice between hope and despair? Regardless of his fate, will his life be better if he builds a sand castle every day rather than just lying down in the sand.
