"Our real problem will be excessively intelligent machinery, I'm afraid."

So, you agree w. Bill Joy?

My argument there is that information is irreversible, we have to engage in a race between ever-easier annihilation technologies, and ever more clever defense mechanisms. We have no choice, it's good training for self-directed evolution, and we'll become more robust as a result.

Are you feeling more robust yet ?

As a practical "spin-off" example - there are something like 60 bioterrorist agents, and we need to develop detection and defenses for them all, and others as they come up. That will spur ingenious methods that can automatically defend against more common biohazards, like the flu.

Perhaps it is an article of faith that we'll win such a race - like my favorite - that the Internet is being created by our collective intelligence in response to the first serious threats to our entire species, which we otherwise would not be able to deal with.
