Returning 10 million to the Saudi prince was a great gesture, but it was done in a very insulting way

Don't worry, he had a great explanation ready...Giuliani was afraid of the Jews who run New York.

Bravo for Giuliani. It is not in our interests to kiss up to the Saudis anymore...look where 30 years of kissing up have got us; the Saudis are deeply complicit in Bin Laden's schemes. It is a sign of strength, not weakness, to notice when a supposed ally is behaving like an enemy.

HG, <<Returning 10 million to the Saudi prince was a great gesture, but it was done in a very insulting way. Sure, the Saudi prince was pretty insulting too, but in the name of diplomacy, where US expects other countries to eat a humble pie <step down>, the whole thing could have been managed more discreetly. Sometimes a little less arrogance goes a long way in managing relationships. One can be as effective, more effective, in a quiet, subdued, mature sort of way... >>

What do you think we should have done? just smile, say thank you and not cash the check? I don't think so.. The man right there said our past policies are at least partly responsible for this disaster and we should sit down and think about it or something to that effect. Screw him... he just told you he is not your friend. Anybody who suggests that we had this coming to us, our past actions are responsible for this or some similar crap is probably an enemy sympathizer. I realize I probably will get some flame for saying this, but just think about that a little before firing off a flame post.
Regards,
sam a

<i.I have been quiet about this, but that slap on the face of a royal, wasn't the most diplomatic thing to do. Thats not how people in Asia and Middle East do things. How can US expect him

You are wrong about that HG. Turning down the check from the Saudi Royal was completely appropriate. We must not show complicity in the denigration of ANY excuse for the events of 9/11.

Guliani did the just and right, Western thing. We are Westerners. We do not have to do things the way that people of the ME do things. The prince was the one out of line, and in NY at ground zero, of all places. What an insult to the West. Where are his manners? Where is his decency, his rules of decorum, his sense of diplomacy? IMO he was setting the USA up and Guliani didn't fall for it.

His lack of compassion for humanity was laid bare on his sleeve. Just as there is little compassion for his own people, he proved that there is even less for Americans.

We are at war, and this is no time for glad handing and pussy footing around issues like 6000 dead people, of which 5500 cannot be found. It must be declared. Ours is a just cause, and the people of the West and it's leaders won't be mocked on the public stage.

Ah but the insult was from a 'lowly mayor', which is not the federal government, so it can be smoothed over. If necessary. After the Saudi statements yesterday, I am sure leaders in both countries are working on it now.

Our leaders need cheap oil. SA needs someone to sell it to.

Returning 10 million to the Saudi prince was a great gesture, but it was done in a very insulting way.

I see you're catching hell over this statement, but it appears that you're willing to "appease" those who funded and supported those who carried out the very attack upon the WTC that were shedding crocodile tears over.

Al Waleed needs a come-uppance. He's been profiled on CNBC as some major investment guru, and it's just incredibly insensitive of him to travel to Wall Street and backstab the very city that helped make him so wealthy.

The Saudis have been "paying off" the Taliban and Bin Laden for years, trying to put off the inevitable. They made him stronger than he should be. And by trying to avoid stirring up radicals in their own country by refusing to confront him, they have encouraged him, as well as their eventual downfall.

Furthermore, the Saudis have done their part to encourage the perpetuation of the Arab-Israeli conflict, hoping to play these two powerful political forces off against one another so that they don't threaten them, as well as the cynical political support they believe they gain by taking such a stance.

But the Saudis could care less about the Palestinians... They never lifted a finger when Jordan ruled the West Bank. Palestians, at that time, were known as Jordanians, who only gave up all claim to the "occupied territories" in 1989.

So the gall Al-Wahleed showed in trying to claim that US policy needs to be adjusted is ridiculous to say the least. The Saudis are JUST, IF NOT MORE, responsible for what has occurred there.

If anything, their support of Arafat during his days as head of the PLO is telling. They paid "tribute" to him as well, just so long as he didn't disrupt their society.

So Al-Wahleed should have kept his mouth shut and not made a political statement that implied we were responsible for becoming targets of the very people his own nation (and himself directly?) have been financially supporting for over a decade.

Not only would I have shoved that check what the sun don't shine, I would have made him persona non grata in NYC until an apology was received. Screw his "saving face".

If you permit this people over there in the ME to perpetuate their lies and half-truths long enough, they begin to believe them as well, causing them to lose touch with reality.
