British tourists in fighter jets' sights

Two fighter jets were scrambled after a plane of British
tourists strayed off course.

The Austrian air force fighters intercepted the airliner after
the pilot repeatedly ignored requests for identification.

The plane left its Edinburgh to Turkey flightpath and headed
towards a chemical plant. It eventually continued its journey.

The scare started when the Turkish Onur Airlines MD 88
ignored warnings to leave Austrian airspace.

A military spokesman told the Mirror: "If the pilot had not
been able to satisfy the fighter pilots that all was OK, he
could have been forced to land or escorted to the border.
Shooting down was an option if it headed towards a
sensitive area."

A spokeswoman for Vienna Airport said: "It was an incident
over in seconds but with the potential to be very grave."

The Turkish pilot will face an inquiry.

Helicopter task force used near Kandahar

Helicopter gunships which are used to carry ground-troops are involved in special operations in Afghanistan.

A senior defence official confirmed a mission was under way early this morning near Kandahar.

The source says an AC-130 attack aircraft is being used for the mission in combination with "task force 160," the elite special forces helicopter unit.

Sources claim the mission is targeting Brigade 55, the Taliban's elite forces. The reports have not yet been confirmed.

The AC-130 turboprop plane is used by American ground forces trained for small-unit operations in hostile country. It was the first acknowledged use of special-forces aircraft in the conflict.

"We felt it was the appropriate weapon to be used," said the defence official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
