I think that your idea of writing a letter to our representatives is an excellent one, and also timely , since the ANWR issue is currently before the Senate. A few more Democrat votes should make it happen, so there really is a chance here to make a difference. My letter would make two main points:

Dear Senator XXX,

It is clear that the Arab states do not share our basic values, so we are foolish to make our society dependent on them. We need to send a message to the Arabs that we no longer want to buy their oil, and that we are looking for alternatives. To this end:

1/ I support drilling in ANWR, and think that the environmental concerns have been greatly exaggerated.

2/I support fuel conservation efforts, such as raising CAFE or increasing gasoline taxes



The reason for lobbying for both more production and more conservation is that it sets up a nice compromise between the environmental types and the oil types. Both get something that they want.
