They are not using a typical numeric keypad phone are they?

My guess is that there are some PDA-type devices and PCIA cards being sold but the vast majority of devices are still handsets with keypads. Prior to 1x, Korea was seeing data usage slightly above the US, but nothing like Japan.

This is why Korea is a pretty good test market for the US/Europe. It is still an open question if 1xrtt/GPRS will be able to stimulate data usage. Thus far, data usage on 1x handsets has seen a pretty good increase (I think it is 3 times off a low base)....but I think we need to see more data to see if this surge is just due to early-adopters.

It is also going to be crucial to see how new content is developed for the capabilities of the 1x handsets. BREW and Java applications are being developed and are probably going to be deployed in the next couple of months. The wireless industry needs to see a second country have the same explosion that Japan had with the introduction of i-mode.

One country is an aberration....two is a trend.

Mike, All,

I came across this glossary (url below) from Cable Labs in pdf format that covers "most" last mile terms. While they cover terms associated with DSL, they omit references to FTTH. Hmm..

In any event, I think it's a keeper for the domains that they *do* cover, which are very well done.

But why do they not acknowledge what is ultimately to be?

re: SK Telecom data subs..

well, funny. Long time ago I took a position in a Canadian wireless/space telecom equipment provider: ComDev - CDV.TO . They are a heavyweight in 3G wireless and space applications but their wireless component business side was too dependent on Nortel to thrive and is subject to winding down or disposition. The accompanying writeoffs sent the stock from can$ 6.00 to $2.00.

Well however ComDev is the developer of the M/Ergy system, ca CDMA2000 application if memory serves me right. Today it was announced that they are an important component in the SK CDMA 3G buildout..

The stock jumped 30% during the day to close around $3.30 (Can$)

COM DEV and Contela Selected by SK Telecom to Provide a 1xEV-DO Trial Network Using COM DEV's M/ERGY(TM) Product
COM DEV's New CDMA2000, 1xEV-DO, all-IP, High Speed Wireless Internet Access System Scores International Success with Korea's Largest CDMA Operator

SAN DIEGO, CA, Nov. 1 /CNW/ - COM DEV International Ltd. (TSE:CDV - news) and Contela, Inc. announced today that they have been selected to provide a trial 1xEV-DO (evolution-data only) network to SK Telecom using COM DEV's all-IP, M/ERGY(TM) branded, CDMA2000, 1xEV-DO Base Stations, Core Network and Access Terminal equipment. The trial network will be deployed as part of an operational demonstration of 1xEV-DO technology and services in Seoul, South Korea that SK Telecom is conducting as part of its plan to build-out a nationwide 1xEV-DO network beginning in 2002.
"Receiving our first commercial M/ERGY order from SK Telecom, one of the largest CDMA carriers in the world, provides tremendous industry recognition of M/ERGY's competitive value," said COM DEV Chief Operating Officer, John Keating. "Together with Contela, we will be devoting all of our resources and capabilities to ensure a successful trial. Beyond the trial, the Contela partnership will continue to strengthen M/ERGY as we expect their 1xRTT and voice-over-IP technology to contribute to evolving subsequent versions of M/ERGY that will address both voice and data in an integrated IP platform."

"Our partnership is working very well. Contela and COM DEV have quickly come together as an integrated team," said Dr. Sun Park, Contela Chief Executive Officer. "We believe that we have developed the system and the team needed to meet the very high standards for performance and service set by SK Telecom".

SK Telecom announced in June of this year that it would deploy a CDMA2000, 1xEV-DO network in Korea and launch commercial service in 26 cities by May of 2002. This service launch coincides with the commencement of the Soccer World Cup being co-hosted by Korea and Japan, which starts at the end of May.

CDMA2000, 1xEV-DO technology provides a packet data-based system that enables CDMA operators to provide high speed data service with peak data rates up to 2.4 megabits per second. With the significantly increased speed and capacity offered by CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, M/ERGY operators are positioned to provide video and audio streaming, wireless Web browsing, interactive gaming and other next generation multimedia services, all without wires.

COM DEV International Ltd. announced in September that it had entered into an agreement with Contela, Inc. of Sungnam, Korea to market COM DEV's 1xEV-DO M/ERGY(TM), all-IP, wireless Internet system in Korea. The agreement also provides for future co-development and distribution of wireless systems utilizing Contela's CDMA 1xRTT wireless and VoIP technologies.

Last year, SK Telecom had operating revenue of 5761 billion Won (US $4.7 billion) and net income of 951 billion Won (US $775 million). SK Telecom has been the first to deploy every new generation of CDMA networks. Its early adoption of CDMA2000, 1xEV-DO continues its track record of pioneering CDMA technology to achieve extraordinary financial success.
