No its not tax, but almost everyone I know pays Zakat. In fact I haven't come across a well to do Moslem in Kashmir or in the Arab world who doesn't pay if he can.

Unfortunately I know only average, middle or upper middle class Arab and Indian Moslems, and most of their zakat goes directly to the families who are struggling to meet their needs. So with them, it IS like a cheque to make up for the lack of income for some families.

I once had an Arab neighbor who recieved help in the form of furniture and finance, from a very rich Arab. I remember it coz we had been struggling with furnishing OUR home and wished we had a godfather as well. <g> It had been the rich guys Zakat offering, and he also offered to underwrite the expenses for his entire 12 member family to Saudi for Haj.

I jumped to the conclusion that all rich Arabs did that.

I may have been wrong in that assumption....

Gotta go out. Beautiful day...
