Unless you consider the cost of:

1. 6000 dead Americans, with the potential for thousands more.
2. 15 billion dollar airline bailout.
3. Billions of dollars spent in the persian gulf to keep oil "cheap".
4. Billions of dollars lost to the treasury in tax revenues.
5. Billions of dollars in security measures of all kinds.

Imo ME oil got a lot more expensive on Sept. 11. Costs that you have not sufficiently added to your equation. That these costs are indirectly related to US dependance on ME crude makes them no less real.

Re China.

There is a substantial time lag involved in China being able to "sop up" decline in US demand. With all of China's markets in recession that time is certainly not now. That is why time is of the essence.
