TORRANCE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 16, 2001--Hi-Shear Technology Corporation (AMEX:HSR - news), today announced its first quarter earnings ending August 31, 2001. Revenues of $3,483,000 were up 51% during the quarter as compared to the revenues of $2,313,000 reported in the same period last year. Net income increased to $422,000 compared to the net income of $36,000 reported for the first quarter last year.

The growth in revenues for the quarter is reflective of the large amount of new orders booked during each of the last three quarters. While the increase in revenues was broad-based, significant increases in direct sales to foreign and government customers contributed to a large portion of the increase in total revenues. Net income was higher than for same period last year due to higher volume, lower interest cost, and a $276,000 increase to profit under a recently adopted accounting change.

During the quarter Hi-Shear entered into a license agreement with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) whereby Hi-Shear is licensed to use key patented NASA pyrotechnic technology in the manufacture of Hi-Shear's pyrotechnic initiation products. NASA, working directly with Hi-Shear, will provide the training and special equipment necessary for this unique technology. This patented technology and special equipment represents the state of the art in pyrotechnic manufacturing and safety.

Hi-Shear Technology Corporation provides aerospace and defense products in applications where safety, performance and high reliability are essential. It develops and produces advanced systems and products that are primarily used worldwide in space satellites, launch vehicles, missiles, and government programs. The Company is also continuing to adapt its technology to produce advanced, competitively priced products for commercial markets.
