I suspect Handspring has probably made a deal for marketing its new product with the likes of Cingulaire, AT&T Wireless, and VoiceStream, all of which either use GSM now or are committed to switching to GSM in the near future. These three companies together have more subscribers than Verizon or Sprint, but, except for very short messages, stock quotes, and similar information that takes very little file capacity, their GSM system will be a major constraint, not just in speed but in handling a large number of users simultaneously. Still, the more flash memory units that are used in these devices, the better it is for the whole sector.
