This was a particular response to Laz and similar views by Tim that you "have to break a few eggs to make an omelet". It wasn't my metaphor. Laz says he doesn't care how many Afghanis litter the countryside. I'm guessing he wouldn't have a problem expanding this to Pakistan. Such a cavalier attitude doesn't seem like the moral high road to me. BTW, I was talking about our numbers of confirmed kills, not those of the Taliban(in the Viet Nam case, the numbers from the Vietcong ). I KNOW those would be suspect. Ours were too but tended to be a little closer to reality.

If we are embarking on World War III, I'd like to know.

How would you know who we are killing? Our military isn't very forthcoming, no news agencies have good access. Have you read Virtual War: Beyond Kosovo- the argument in that book is that the only democratic check on modern warfare is the media, and where the media are kept out, you might as well have a dictatorship running your war. We have no idea who we are killing, or not killing. Which is unsettling, imo. But not to the "Kill em ALL, I'm not worried about it" folks. I guess.
