It has been 12 years, before Saturday, since Florida and Florida State had lost football games on the same day --- last happening on Sept. 9, 1989, when FSU lost to Clemson and Florida (coached by Galen Hall) lost to Ole Miss.

Paterno press conference recap

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Both QBs will play on Saturday. The starter will be determined by who practices better this week.

2. No new injuries to report.

3. We got lucky to beat Purdue and their spread last year. You have to mix things up against the spread offense. NW relies on the run more than Purdue does. Anderson is as good a back as there is in the country. Zak Kustok can run the ball well. They give you a lot of different looks - shotgun, no huddle.

Depth will be a big factor for PSU in this game. A lot of people have to be ready to play.

4. PSU has never gotten into a groove offensively. Joe hopes that we now have the right people in the right spots and that the coaches are preparing the players well. Joe blames himself for the coaching confusion that we have seen this year. There have been times that the coaches have not been able to get into a rhythm with preparations given the open dates we've had this year. Now there are no more open dates and everyone can get into a groove with 7 games in a row.

5. The spread is not the sole reason NW has had success. They won back to back Big 10 champs in 1995-96 without the spread. Randy Walker has done a good job of tailoring his schemes to his players. They have a lot of good football players.

6. Joe spent the off week going over a lot of tape to see if he was missing something. The team makes so many mistakes in crucial situations. He continues to believe he has a good young football team. Eventually, they will put things together and make plays. Joe points to the teams they've played as the main reasons why the team hasn't had success. Miami and Michigan in particular are excellent football teams.

7. No personnel changes forthcoming on the OL. Joe looked at what they were teaching the players to make sure they weren't giving them too much to handle.

8. The off week was a big help. Giving them a couple of days off to get away from football was a big help. It gave the coaching staff a chance to get practice schedules set as well.

9. Chicago kids - Yaacov Yisreal was a highly recruited kid out of Chicago. He might have been a better WR than DB in high school. Rich Gardner came in as a walkon and got himself a scholarship this past fall. Joe would be disappointed if those kids weren't excited to go back home and play.

10. Joe was asked about shaking things up by putting Michael Robinson in there. He doesn't want to shake things up. He feels the QBs have played well so far. Joe doesn't want to waste a year of eligibility by putting Robinson in there unless it's absolutely necessary. Robinson is a good young prospect.

They've played some good teams. They've had some bad luck. They have made a lot of mistakes that cost them. The reasons the team is not winning have nothing to do with the QB spot.

11. Joe thought PSU would beat Michigan based on the way the team practiced that week. The team felt that way, and then the receivers drop 3 straight perfect passes. The team has practiced well. The players have done everything the staff has asked of them. He's not about to change how the team practices now. He wants the players to go out there and have some fun. If they keep working at it, and they're good enough, good things will start to happen. If the other team is better and things don't go our way, then they're better. Nothing you can do about that.

12. They will try to get a medical redshirt for Sean McHugh. Blosser and Jefferson will be fine at the FB spot. Jefferson is a good prospect. He's a tough kid, but not tough all the time with his blocking. When he becomes more consistent, he'll be very good.

13. PSU runs some spread offense in Joe's opinion. Joe thinks the spread is only having one back in the backfield. They run some shotgun, some spread, but none of it matters if you can't block people. The coaching staff is aware of the spread and other offensive schemes and they're trying to adapt to the personnel they have.

14. The players know their roles and when they will get into the game. They practice that stuff all week. There may be some positions where one guy should be playing more than another. The first 25 plays are scripted on Tuesday and the offense practices those plays all week.

15. Joe thinks they're a good football team and will be fine because his players work hard and they just need to have some success.

16. Friends in the coaching community have been calling and writing to give encouragement. Joe doesn't read the papers so he doesn't know what people think of him. If they think he's too old, they should ask the players. Joe spends more time on the field running around than most people. He can run the shotgun snap better than the QBs on the squad. He doesn't think he's too old. He's enjoying this team and believes they will be good.

17. Joe will really miss coaching when he retires, but he also knows that he owes it to the university and the players to get out of coaching when he feels he can't perform anymore.

However, he's not at that point right now. He knows he can still get the job done. Joe feels bad for the players because they came here with high expectations and things haven't worked out. The coaching staff works like dogs and they believe in these players.

Joe said he doesn't think he's too old. He looks at himself in the mirror and says to Sue "God are you lucky to be married to this hunk!" :-)

18. Joe has felt he needs to have a more hands-on approach with this team because they're young and the coaching staff isn't sure how fast they'll come along.

19. They've thought about bringing some kids out of redshirts, but if you make that decision, you'd better be sure the kids are gonna play a lot. A lot of freshmen will play - Guman, Zemaitis, Harrell, Lamar Stewart. etc... The rest probably will remain redshirts. Everyone that can make a contribution is playing.

20. Matt Schmitt is back and will play today. EZ Smith and Damone Jones will also see playing time this week.<<
