They consolidated power rather effectively in the desperate depression that gripped Germany. Times of crisis are always superb times for inhumane tyrants to seize power- because reason and rationality are suspended, and emotionalism and fear take over.

The way the Nazis "won" the 1933 election was by putting their opponents into jail, prison and concentration camps via a device called the Reichstag Fire Decree signed by a senile Hindenberg. After Hitler seized power, he abolished the Reichstag - no more silly things like law for him.

That's not what most people call "winning" an election.

You were right - it was a raw seizure of power, not a popular elected government.
