Sam, the additional interest in NAND flash memory comes from the fact that this is the fastest growing segment of the memory chip industry. DRAM is growing only slowly, as seen by the huge drop in prices and the overcapacity. It's also interesting to note that converting a DRAM factory into a fabricator for flash memory may not be as easy as it sounds. Otherwise these companies would not be talking with Toshiba.

There is some basis for the notion that at least some DRAM itself will be replaced by flash memory, allowing certain programs and applications to begin working the moment the device is switched on--no need to boot from the disk drive. If this is one of the coming trends, then existing flash memory fabricating capacity will be in short supply IN A MATTER OF MONTHS. If that's true, then we will see a big improvement not only in SNDK but in fabricators such as TSM, UMC, and TSEM, all of which will produce a series of one-time gains as SNDK holdings of shares in these companies gain value.
